Stephen Robertson has already explained why LDS is over the speed of light, it's because if they didn't go over it just flying to an L-point could take 10 mins or something.

Give it a good bang.....

See I told you that would fix it.

Yes...we know this, but we want the LDS speeds for it to be more realistic. If it takes you 10 minutes unstead to 10 seconds to reach a certain destination wouldnt you make sure that destination is quite well worth it?

Now this is not something i would probably want to use for Acts 1-3 but in freeform mode, where there is no hurry to get anywere, you can use the extra time to plan out your attack or listen to some kick ass music or do homework. Or you could go to engineering and carefully tweek the power settings for the most Economical: quick attack, recon/spying, full out assault, nuclear launch (which means engines and shields for escape oh and the fusion missle mod), disabling, or stalking mission.

Now most of the time you may not know what you're going to do when you get somewhere, but its always nice to have a good plan right?

I heard someone say that why can't LDS be some great big jump instead of dozens of smaller jumps. It's because that capsule drive IS the big jumper, and you wouldn't want to wait that long for your LDS to kick in, would you?

And i thought it would be a good idea to have a countdown meter for how long it would take to reach your destination at your current speed. That way, you can pop out of LDS at 0:00:00 at maximum speed and be either there or really close to it.

And my theory on the workings of LDS:
Linear Displacment System displaces space in a line in front of the ship, and then the ship is dragged into the displaced area at near the speed of light. It's sort of like when you splash in water, all the water around it rushes to where the splash was. So then put it in front of you, and then perform them at a rapid pace, and you have a reliable means of traveling long distances.

And that is my two bits. <img src=icon_smile_shy.gif border=0 align=middle>

(P.S. "e" is scientific notation, adding a zero for each number:
6e10 = 60000000000
where 10 is the number of zeros added to the end of six. So StoneDeadViking is right.)

Thanks Talon. That damn 'e' was starting to get to me. Here's how to change the program: Open the Infogrames folder, then open the Independance War 2-Edge of Chaos folder (duh), open the resource (not the zipped one) folder next. From there open the subsims folder, then the systems folder, then the player folder (that's alot of folders...) Scroll down the list until you see the files lds_class1, lds_class2, and lds_class3. Open them (probably best to do this one at a time), and scroll down until you see the lines (this example is from the lds_class2 file):

; LDS drive properties
max_speed=6e10
acceleration=5
ramp_up_time=5

Change the "6e10" to 27e7 (that should place the speed at 270,000,000; .9 x the speed of light. If you wish to change the other attributes, the acceleration is (I think...I'm new to this)the factor the acceleration is increased by, and the ramp-up variable determines the ammount of time between pressing the F6 or L key and the drive actually engaging. Save the file, then close it. Do this to all three LDS engines (or just one if you wish to use it occasionally). Then, back up to the Independance War 2 file again. There will be a zipped folder named resource. Click to open it. Once it is opened, goto subsims/systems/player and change the three lds files here. You will have to drag them to your desktop, edit them in the same manner as before, then place them back into the file. Thats it.
Man, that was a long post...
